I love books that make me better. Sure fictional tales are fun, but I especially enjoy learning practical ways in which I can grow mentally and spiritually. Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend has proven to be the book I needed this summer. You can tell by the countless notes and highlights I've made on several pages.
Boundaries is for people who have trouble saying NO. In other words, people like me. I would often say that I pride myself on being reliable. But that "reliability" often resulted in favors at the expense of my own wellbeing. Between giving last-minute help on a classmate's assignment or covering a coworker's weekend shift, I would be left too exhausted or drained to take care of my own responsibilities.
Despite being tired, I was still plagued by the question: What if they don't think I'm a good Christian/friend/employee if I say no?
As I shared in my previous post, it's OK to do favors, however it's not OK to constantly save someone from their lack of planning or responsibility. Perhaps my biggest takeaway from the book has been that I no longer need to be nice out of fear. Authors Cloud and Townsend explain that boundaries-- physical, mental, and emotional-- define and protect us. "They define what is me and what is not me. A boundary shows me where I end and someone else begins, leading me to a sense of ownership" (Cloud & Townsend, p. 31). Boundaries are about building personal property lines that can protect your peace and keep out harmful influences.
Since this book has been so impactful and life-changing for me, it is my hope that it will do the same for you.
